Let's first start out with clarifying two things about me.
- I know what too much about TV shows as a result of watching too much TV as a kid.
- I enjoy a good issue of People Magazine - just like the next person.
Yes - I am part of the majority of people who like to watch pop TV and shows that are reality based. I contribute to the current demand for what sells - but there are some things that are starting to disturb me - really disturb me. Murder and Death on TV. For instance - tonight's 48 Hours Mystery - it is about a murder.
When was the last time you saw that a News Show like Dateline or 48 Hours had a show about something other than a murder. If dateline did not have the whole "To Catch a Predator Series" what else would they do shows about. What is America's fascination with Murder. We have CSI, Law and Order (18 Versions), Cold Case - and the list goes on and on. Is it our fascination with the impossible or is it our ability to be a voyeur into a world we can never imagine?
I really have to hand it to ABC Primetime as of late - they are really working on finding stories that not only get your mind flowing, but are pretty interesting. Same with 60 Minutes - always a good program. I am not saying murder and death is out, but why do they seem to focus so much on those topics.
Many of today's news programs could take a cue from 60 minutes - Still rated one of the top 20 network shows consistently. Journalism needs to step up and look at something beyond the dark side of our lives. If that is all we see - we never believe in the good of others.
